This year my I got my chimeny cleaned out and the guy told me it was shot. It is just about 20 years old and I burn coal for for 100% of my heat. I can see the inside is gone and the top is rusted off.. It is 12 feet of doubble wall SS pipe, inside is 5 inch, but everyone tells me to use 6 inch. I am running a franco belge hand fired stove. I got prices from $1800-2200. Seams high to me but than again I am Jersey. First Does the prices seam correct and second and most important I need a referal of some one who is repuptible to do the work since I know little about it. Know any good installers who will do a good job and not break the bank?

I had my 8" Metalbestos chimney installed 19 yrs ago and was $1400. so I would say that in todays prices $1800-2200 would be about right installed.

If you are including the labor to install...
Then it is a good price...
Price the parts on a web site...
then you will know the markups and labor.

I priced out 15 feet of Metalestos chimney pipe with a life time warranty from http://www.ventingpipe.com/index.cfm for a little over 1200 bucks. So having it installed for 1800 or so doesn't sound to far off.

I think the prices you got are in the ballpark. Might you price out a masonry chimney? It'll be the last one that you buy.

I can remember way back when...when metalbestos chimney was about $25 a 2' length. Then ONE lawsuit and after the lawyers got done it was around $75 a length.

I used to work at at Polaroid, and twenty years or so ago, I had to put in a new chimney liner. I called my pipefitter at work, and asked him who we bought SS pipe from. I think it was a company called All Stainless in Cambridge MA. Schedule 5 pipe is much heavier than stovepipe and I bought 12' of it for about $13/foot. I had to oval it to get the end through the damper (that was a trick), then put it down the chimney, and it is still there. I bought 316L stainless. It is rated for sulfuric acid use.

It will probably be here when the house is gone....

See if you can find an industrial pipe supplier and ask for 316ss type L, in shedule 5 (almost 1/8" wall thickness) It will last forever, but is heavy (mine weighed about 100 lbs)
