Hi all,

After much research we decided to purchase a coal furnace. We are in the process of hooking it up but not enough info is given. After purchasing what we thought was the correct gauge (30) piping we then contacted the dealer and we were told that the gauge was not heavy enough and we needed 24 gauge. We have been able to locate the piping from a local heating company but they told us that the gauge recommended was hard to work with as there was no give to it. We were then told by the dealer to check recommendations through the National Fuel Gas Code. Every search requires me to purchase this info. What is your experience and recommendation for piping? We also have gone with a direct/power vent.

Are you talking about hooking up the flue pipe or the ducting for the furnace blower? If you are talking about the flue pipe then yes it should be 24 gauge. It is a little harder to work with but by no means overly hard. You may even get away without having to cut it at all. You buy the straight pieces and the elbows you need and put them together. They even make adjustable sections that slide inside one and the other.
