shenk, from my research here, you don't need treated lumber, regular will work fine, building it out like a regular wall with 2x4's and the plywood on the inside. Painting it odviously extends the life of it. I'm starting this project soon myself. Your dimensions should hold 3 tons.

Yesterday I pulled a coal bin apart where I recently bought the boiler. It was full of coal since '81 and the wood looked like it was brand new. The only problem anywhere on it was the timbers that supported the false floor obviously had seen plenty of water, as they had rotted pretty badly. All the plywood, and specifically in contact with the coal, was perfect. Paint will make it pretty, but I doubt it will be needed to protect it from the coal.
