Look around on the forum, there are several topic and threads on cold air returns..
The short version: without a 'cold' air return, you are pulling the coldest air in you house, the cold air off the basement floor into the furnace to heat.. AND you are trying to force or pressureize the upstairs with the forced air.. What you need and want is a circulation loop, the hot air replacing the cool air being drawn back into the furnace to be reheated..
I'd figure some way to hook a duct either into the existing cold air return ductwork, or install a new cold air return from somewhere upstairs to the inlet of the furnace.. There is a very big difference in efficiency and heat output.

Doesn't the cold air return hook into your furnace? and didn't you tie your koker into the existing plenum? maybe a pic would help us out...
