PA Bird Hunting

Any woodcock or grouse hunters out there??

I have been known to shoot at quite a few grouse. I used to go grouse hunting all of the time. I have not gone at all in the past few years because there aren't many birds around here and I get tired of picking ticks off of me. A real tick problem here in the last 5 or so years. If I make it out hunting I usually take my beagle and try to scare up a couple rabbits. Most times anymore I don't even shoot them, I just listen to the dog chase them around.

I bird hunt every year for much the same reason....I love to watch my dogs work. Trying to find good woodcock habitat gets tougher each year and it's worse for grouse....so much for the PA state bird. Maybe we should change it to the stocked pheasant....you know the kind that won't fly unless you step on them. Well anyway....I do so love to get out with the dogs but even they shrug their shoulders at the "no birds here" situation.

Beautiful dogs. The chocolate looks just like a male I once had. I sure did like watching my dog sniff around my place and go on point at birds. He was never trained, just pointed naturally.

Thanks man.....that's Molly my 11 1/2 yr old German Shorthair Pointer...great grouse & woodcock hunter.....great nose...steady on point...and if I can shoot straight she can retrieve too.

im just getting started this year. i have to give up a few archery deer weekends to take my pup out.

That's a beautiful GSP.....looks like my new pup who is almost 6 months old. Which kennel did you get him/her from? I got my pup from Marie @ Keystone Kennels in Dingman's Ferry.

thanks, its a female. i got her last year from lil dikens kennels near harrisburg. it was a long way for me to go but im glad i got her there. she just turned 1 this month. this is my first hunting dog, i have no training experience when it comes to hunting but shes doing good on her own. she finds and points turkeys all the time. shes good at breaking up flocks. she still hasnt learned to sneak in on grouse, she finds them but they take off so quick before she points. she pointed a hen phesant last winter on gamelands and flushed it when i told her to.
