coal grate location question

Hi ,i'am new to the fourm and i have a question about acombation wood/coal stove made by hearth stone vintage 1980-something it had and optional coal grate that was available at the time however i do not have it and cant seam to find one anywere,so what i need to know is has anyone ever seen one or cant i just find a after market grate instead and just use that . also if i do get a grate how do i use it, do i just place it over hot bed of wood ambers,and load up the grate,open my low damper and wait till it catches and readjust the damper :?: PS:BEST wishes to all

Hello Ben,, welcome to the forum.

Read this thread: Converting from wood

There are very similar questions asked and some links to sites and a few answers for you..

For a rough answer, to burn anthracite, all combustion air must come up through the coal bed, the coal will not burn from air above the coal bed. So a coa grate has to be designed into the stove, with a shaker mechanism to agitate the coal bed and get the ash to fall down through the grates into an ashpan.

Take a look at some of the photos and cutaway drawings in the provided links.. you wll see what I'm describing
