Hi guys, total newbie here. Ordered a Harman DVC-500 and am on target for delivery end of October. Been putting off getting coal until my stove delivery date was confirmed. I live in Northwest NJ right on the PA/NY border. Checking the coal pricing thread I see there is a huge savings in picking up coal yourself and most places are an hour or 2 away. I have a midsize pickup with a load capacity of only 750 pounds. I was thinking of renting a moving truck locally to pick up the coal. I also thought that bags would be the way to go so as not to dirty the rental truck up. Anyone with experience have better suggestions for pickup of coal?

Bagged coal is costlier, even in NEPA. I'd go with bulk. Borrow or rent a trailer.

I rented a 5x9 open u haul for $40.00 it can handle 1650lbs. I got 3220lbs with that trailer and a 1/2 ton pickup filling them both up with nut coal. toothy

Good Luck, I ordered a DVC 500 from SOS stove last may and was told, first it would be delivered in December and now I'm told March 2009. I have 11.5 tons coal ready for summer

Don't worry about getting the rental dirty. Either you won't need to do anything, or just rinse with a hose. Anthracite doesn't leave much behind!

No, I haven't seen the loaders - but, as I mentioned in my initial post this is my first coal journey and am looking for good information.

You need an open top trailer.. the loaders hold about 3 tons per load,, they are 8'-9' wide.. we ar not talking about a Bobcat or skid steer, we ar talking about a loader that can pick up a small car.

Woodn'coal.... How did that coal get loaded?

I sold my little pickup to my nephew, but for years I'd take it to a local gravel place & get it loaded with about a half a ton of gravel, dirt, loam, whatever. They have a GIANT loader. They drivers feet are 8 feet off the ground when he's in it. I drive in, catch his eye, and go park next to the pile I want. When he has time he comes and fills a tiny corner of his bucket. He then lines up so most all of it goes into the pick up truck. I stand behind & off to the side, watching the leaf springs and axle. I fiddle my fingers & he will trickles it in until I give him the high sign. He can control it very accurately. I've often joked that he doesn't care....has no heart... no soul.... if I kept fiddling, he'd keep tricking... he'd watch the tires blow apart.... then the axle fold, then the body crush and get buried. I joke... yet I know it's not really that far from funny.

Maybe the coal loaders do the same?

Depending on what breaker you go to you will be loaded from a conveyor belt inside the breaker or a chute inside the breaker now if you want to get loaded off the coal pile they will use a front end loader with either a 3 ton bucket or a 4 ton bucket and one breaker as a hopper that you pull under and they fill the hopper with a front end loader and then pull
the handel on the hopper which has a scale on the bottom of the hopper UAE harmony mine will use a bob cat loader for Pick up trucks and small trailers they also use a hopper with a front end loader for the big rigs Uae is a coal yard the breaker is on top of the mountain the coal and house trailer with the scale is at the bottom No Matter what breaker
you goto you will need a open top trailer or Pick up truck There will be no way for them to fill a inclosed trailer or truck

It is a 6x12 you will have to add plywood sides and a piece for front & back
