Franco Belge: Need Help To Restore and Install

Franco Belge: Need Help To Restore and Install

PostBy: Self Reliance On: Fri Oct 03, 2008 12:15 pm

Please excuse my ignorance. I just bought an old brown Franco Belge enamel coal stove and after spending a few hours on the site, I am interested in getting it restored, installed and fired up. No way I can afford the upcoming heating season without a coal or wood supplement. Coal sounds like a good solution for me and for the country.

There was no manual, and I am not even sure of the model number...12-80? I don't even know if all the parts are there, if it is sound, etc. I know three of the glass strips on the door need replacement and part of the center shaker has sheared off. When it is sound, I could use some insight on the best way to vent it up my clay-lined fireplace and whether I need to pipe, re-line, etc. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to be heating self-reliant. Thanks!

Hello,

I had Franco Belge stoves for years. You need to remove all the tin work and inspect the castings for cracks. Small cracks can be filled with furnace
cement, but large structural cracks mean the stove is toast.
If the stove is sound, the glass strips can be replaced with a single piece of glass. You can get good ceramic glass online. The shaker grate is another
problem. I had a few replacements around, but I haven't been able to find them. I'll look again this weekend. If I find them, I'll let you know. I gave all the glass strips I had to another forum member a few months ago.
I liked the stoves and they burned very well, but the cracked castings did them in.

Good Luck

Thank you TSB...If you find the shaker grate, please let me know...In the meantime, I'll take it apart an see how bad it is. Thanks for getting back to me...BTW, where on the stove does Franco-Belge put the model number? Is 12-80 correct?
