Hi everyone I am new here and am new to the world of stoker stoves. I recently bought an Alaska kodiak Stoker Stove 1. It was made in 1985. I have lots of questions about it and want to learn as much as I can so I can put it to use. I was in the market for a small coal stove to help heat my house and ease the burden of paying for oil. This stove is bigger then I wanted but I got it for 350 dollars and figured I wouldn't get another deal like that.

It does need new glass, but the guy I bought it from has a piece of steel in there now and it doesn't look too bad, but I will be getting new glass for it. I basically have no idea how to operate this stoker. I shouldn't say that, I do think I could figure it out pretty easily. I grew up with coal heat. I would like to find an instruction manual, and if possible an exploded parts diagram. I would like to get to know all the parts and how everything is supossed to work. I also think the motor that blows air through the grate may be bad, it is quite a bit louder then the blower motor on top of the hopper. Is there a way to quiet it up or do I need a new one? Any help would be appreciated.

I can't wait to get this beast going. I think it is going to bake us out of the house, but for what we paid for it, I figure if it's too much, then next year we can sell it and find something smaller. We are going to put this in our living room. It's not the nicest looking thing out there, but if it keeps us warm then I could live with it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome!

I have what maybe the same stove but it says stoker stove II. I just bought it recently and am still working on it. Check my rebuild thread in this same section of the forum.

Do you have pictures of yours?

I have an instruction manual I had emailed to me from a kind member on here, it may help you with your stove. Its not the same thing but the stoker mechanism should be the same. PM me your email and I will forward it.

The part you said is making noise, I disassembled mine to an extent and lubed it up, good as new. Also, watch how you mount that metal box around it, its kinda sloppy. I had to adjust mine just a touch to make it quiet.

I paid 500 for mine but since then I have 200-300 more into it to make it perform like new or even better than new. I didn't get new glass. I ground the inside of it so all I can see is a glow from the burn. My brother got new glass for his and within 3 weeks it was total crap again. Glass is around 65 bucks.

Get your camera, get your wallet, and lets rebuild that baby! Learn from the mistakes I made so hopefully you can do yours cheaper!

I am still a newbie but I will offer help where I can. The guys on here have tought me a few things :D

Well it looks exactly like yours except yours is a little taller. I would like to see that instruction book.

I think the noisy motor does just need a good cleaning. I will do that but I don't want to mess anything up.

I was wondering how you control the combustion fan speed on this, or do I need some type of controller? When I plug it in it blows pretty hard, but I don't think I want it to be full blast all the time.

My grate is also cracked like yours but not as bad. I also need new glass, there is a piece of steel in there now. The good thing is that the company where this stove was made is about 30 minutes away, and they said the glass will be around 60 dollars for a new one. I heard they only last a few years before they need replaced. But this is going in our living room so I do want it to look decent.

The stove seems to be in good working condition other then the noisy motor, so I will probably wait to rebuild it until next spring. I really want to just get it all installed and working right now before it gets too cold. I was told the top blower motor is only a couple years old, and the door gaskets are brand new. It was being used up until this year.

Thanks for any help.
