I am installing an add on wood boiler to my home system which is presently an Oil fired system. I very much want to burn coal instead of wood. The wood furnace I am installing is an energy-mate. Anyone ever heard of that brand? I can't seem to find any info on it and I think the company is out of business.
My furnace man told me is is a well built unit. Very heavy constructed. Now the question where can I get coal grates for it? This is a closed fire box with a blower fan that blows up from the bottom. I bought this unit and believe coal is the answer. Any suggestions? Any info you can offer would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to have any more $ 850 oil fill up this coming season.

Thanks in advance

Google coal shaker grates, there are a few internet stove parts stores that may have ones for it. If they are not available for that unit it may be possible to adapt a set that is available. How about a few pis of the firebox and couple of the boiler. A lot of these things were re branded, maybe a member will recognize it.

You can also try a blacksmith shop... especially amish if you have any near you. I had a rig made out of half inch carbon steel with a tower riser to allow air to the bottom refractory (gasification). It was custom and about 150 lbs. and they had it for me within a day for about $200 (a lot of carbon steel). Just a thought.

Some make the grates out of rebar, you may have to fab something up if you can't get anything to fit.
