Loading anything solid on top of a 1500*-2000* fire and it is bound to crack from the rapid heating.. I don't think it is trapped moisture, but it could be..
Be carefull when loading the coal,, the 'popping and cracking' can shoot hot and sharp pieced of coal at your face!!

Excellent advice from Greg!! ....I always wear safety glasses when load my stove & have been hit in the face any number of times! (A shard of burning coal in the eye could ruin your whole day!)LsFarm wrote:Be carfull when loading the coal,, the 'popping and cracking' can shoot hot and sharp pieced of coal at your face!!
I keep safety glasses right next to my gloves beside the stove.
(I always felt the popping was the explosion of small air bubbles trapped in the coal near the surface....Not sure about that though.)

I'll venture to guess it's gases expanding and/or moisture.
