I also used a shop crane and found it to be the most safe and convenient . There is almost no substitute that I can think of if you are doing the job by yourself and the job is in the basement where you cant get a tractor to it. Figure approximetly the center of balance, pump the handle, and put it where you want it. {{If you don't have one the hassle to go borrow or rent one is well worth it.]Then it is time to have a cup and think about the piping and stack considerations. Good Luck, Mike

Sometimes I"ll drill holes in two floor joists, put a bar in the holes, then put some additional bracing under them and use a short chain fall or come along to lift the boiler up and slide the base under.I put 3/4 or 1in steel pipes under the complete boiler and roll it wherever I want. A 520 boiler(upper part) weighs app. 870 lbs.

I recently used an engine hoist just like cArNaGe's picture. I used a good amount of rope rapped through the engine hoist hook, the fire door bracket and the domestic hot water bracket. It worked fine but I'd recommend chain for sure measure.
By the way, from cArNaGe's picture, it looks like the boiler was mounted 180 out. Either that or I messed up real bad.
I'm within a couple of days of lighting it off. It better work like a charm. Installation has been longer than expected due to some issues with the chimney thimble being too close to combustibles. How did the house pass initial inspection?
Anyone know someone who wants a Peerless oil boiler?

There was a period of changeover from 79-81 where either door was used. From what I have researched, it wasn't a clean-cut changeover. I sold the last remaining new round door a few years ago.
When I wanted to buy one in '77 there was no production of stokers, but because of the second gas crisis, they were ramping up again, sort of like what happened this summer.

I laid the base and boiler on their sides, then cemented them together and used a couple heavy duty ratchet straps to hold the units together. Then I used a come-a-long attached to a main house beam and winched the whole unit upright. It takes much less force to tip a unit up than to lift it off the ground. All in all I wish I used an engine hoist, it was hard.

had both he still has the 79 DF Round door with the clean out door above the round veiwing door he also has a early
1949 AP 520 with the veiwing door built in the cleanout door it is a double door unit you need to take a ride up
we are finding neat old stuff Oh if you need round doors he has them 99% of the boiler he finds are from the 50s and 60s
and some early 48s and 49s
