I am new to the coal stoves. This is my first year. I decided with the cold weather forecast for my area the next week that I would try it out. I went through 4 mice trying to light it. They would light the coal around the mouse for about 5 minutes then die out. I have the barometric draft set to .04, small brick is over the hole. I am putting about 1/2 inch of coal on top of the starting mouse. I tried once, with about an inch on top of the mouse, but That did not even get any coal going at all that way. Any suggestions, or should I just look through the forum on starting a stoker coal stove, and try a couple of those methods. Thanks for any ideas.

i have a alaska stove and it took a couple of trys to light it before I became a "pro"....i am able to light it the first time now
try this
put the "mouse " in the back of the chute where it enters the stove from the hopper
push it into the coal
light the fuse
turn on the motor
it should light within 3-4 mins
you could try pre-heating your flue with a heat gun or blow dryer before you light the mouse
my mistake was...when I first lit the stove I did not turn on the blower motor
i hope this helps you

Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Alaska Channing III

I got a channing III as well, just installed last week. I watched the installer light it. He put a piece of cardboard at the end of the shoot to dam it, placed the mouse a few inches up the shoot, let the whole shoot fill with cole from the hopper, and coverd the mouse completely. nothing to be seen but the wick. lit it, closed the door, put the control on 3 for about 30 minutes then I was able to dial it anywhere. Its been running since last thrusday. :) I've been running the stove on simmer at 1.5, tonight I upped it to 2.5 for abit then back down to 2. 73 upstairs, 75 downstairs, 41 outside.
