The check prawl is absolutly needed.You will never get correct feed rates.

Pictorial: DF520 Clutch Assembly w/ part numbers

See the second picture down in the top left corner. You should have a 5/8" threaded hole, intact. If not, you need the bearing bracket replaced.

After looking at those pictures I see that not only do I not have a check pawl in place my stoker has the check pawl installed where the drive pawl should be. I'll have to see where I can locate the correct pieces and reassemble this as originally intended. Thanks for all the info.

The older style of drive pawl looked similar to the current check pawl. You probably have the proper drive pawl.

Oh, ok. It is an older one. 48 or 49 I was told. It's a highboy with a square cast iron door.
