Powell Endorses Obama

Speaking with reporters after his appearance on NBC, Powell said that part of the reason he is supporting Obama is because he did not like the negative tone of John McCain's campaign, which has noted the links between Obama and domestic terrorist William Ayers.

"It troubled me. We have two wars. We have economic problems, we have health problems. ... Those are the problems the American people want to hear about, not about Mr. Ayers, not about who's a Muslim and not a Muslim. Those kind of images going out on Al Jazeera are killing us around the world," he said.

"I thought it was over the top. It was beyond just good political fighting back and forth. ... We can't judge our people and we can't hold our elections on that kind of basis," he added.

Powell, who described himself as still a Republican, added that he also doesn't like the McCain camp's decision to call Obama a socialist because he wants to raise taxes on individuals and businesses making more than $250,000 a year.

Lets say I operate a grocery store and I make more than $250,000. Under Obama's tax cut I would have to pay a higher tax than someone who earns under 250k right? Well guess what is going to happen to the prices of the goods in my store ? Thats right, they are going up. And in the end who really pays the taxes? This theory of taxing the rich and giving to the poor does not work. although it sounds good, the poor will still pay more in the end.

You understand the $250K is net profits, not gross sales (limbaugh clearly did not understand that earlier this week).

You also understand the increased tax is on the amount over 250K.

If you have a million in sales, and your cost of doing business is $740K, you net out $260K, you pay a higher tax rate on $10K.

If the tax rate goes from 30% to 39%, you would pay $900 more in taxes

You would go from paying $78,000 in takes to $78,900

I like that he says “It’s not about race”.

I've met Colin Powell and heard him speak, in person, on 2 occasions. He is an arrogant human being. Quite cocky and full of himself. Imagine that...a man, in the US government, with power, who is cocky....what a revelation.

The removable of our backbone as a country will be our downfall. Trying to placate everyone while at the same time trying to selfishly indulge yourself at all costs is why our political system is such a joke in general.

Dick, I've had this arguement on other forums lately and a lot of people don't think of how much this will really effect them, I've run a small business for over 20 years now.

If he's going to tax business' more they will do 1 of 2 things, either downsize creating more unemployment and less tax revenue or increase their prices passing it on to you the consumer. Same as when gas skyrocketed, within a few months the price of goods and services went up. Yes, business' have write offs, but remember, some have more than others so it depends on the business.

Also, most don't realize that a small business is considered 1-500 employees, so think of all the business' it will effect. Local lumber companies, retail stores, restaurants, car dealers, etc. They're trying to make it out like no plumbers make 250K, that's BS, i can attest to that first hand, they and alot of contractors do. Everytime i get hit with more and more increases my prices just go up, so people need to realize that next time they have to call "Joe the plumber" and he's now charging $100+/hr you can say thank you Mr. Obama.

I don't understand why anyone would want to "redistribute " their wealth, it's just another form of welfare. Lets punish the one's who actually go out and bust their ass and take risks in life and give more to those who don't ?? Everyone has the same opportunitys in life, most are to scared to take the risk so it's easier to work for someone else and complain about those who make more. Self employment isn't for everyone, I've given up a lot, family, friends, vacations, went 6 years without one once so I have NO sympathy for thise who don't try or are willing to. I'll decide what charitys to give to. Just for a side note I have no problem helping anyone who's disabled and who cannot physicaly work, but having 5-6 kids and being lazy doesn't constitute that.

Where does it end too ? Now it's 250K, the other day I heard it's really 200K. What's for them to one day say that 150K or even 100K is to much ? I love how these politicians know what's best for OUR money but they never seem to know how to spend THEIR money wisely

Not arguing the merits of the argument. My "????" response to Gambler was meant to say What does that have to do with Powell endorsing Obama?

Personally, I think Powell's negative words in regards to McCain's judgment & campaign tactics are a devastating indictment that no amount of "spinning" can undo. Powell has been a loyal "soldier" for the Republican party, both literally & figuratively for over a decade. He did not just endorse Obama, he verbalized a stinging rebuttal of McCain's judgment, character & fitness for the Presidency from which McCain can never recover.
