Justs started hooking up my boiler. My grandfather was a plumber and when my grandmother was getting rid of his tools and old supplies I stashed away the items I thought I could one day use. Its now paying off because I have a pile of brand new valves and fittings. I have 2 large rolls of solder that I am sure contain lead because they are probably 25 years old. Should I use them or toss them? If it was for domestic water I would definitely toss them but I figure for the boiler it wouldn't be an issue. As to my health while soldering a few joints couldn't hurt could it? I think I heard that line some where before.

Buy some new flux, the kind with ground up solder in the flux... self tinning flux... it is the best there is.. then use the lead solder.. you aren't boiling the solder, so you don't get any via your lungs.. just don't chew on any of the lead... and you will be fine..

I still have some lead-based solder,, it works fine.. the new stuff is a bit easier to work with,, but with the self tinning flux,, it all is easy..
