Not sure if anyone has thought of this or if anyone has already tried it.... I'm planning on getting an ice cube scoop for shoveling coal into my insert. I'm talking about the aluminum or stainless steel type that are often found in hotel/motel ice machines. They have a deeper "pocket" than a typical small shovel and a nice ergonomic handle at the end.....seems just the right size/shape for scooping coal and placing it just where you want it.

See my index to projects below and look at my coal scooper. It might give you some ideas.

I sometimes use a grain scoop. Works very well. Allows filling without alot of dust.
