Just got the stove- not having luck with keeping it burning. Finding allot of ash on the grates - should I be more agressive with the shaker? 1st. time got a real hot fire but it went out after 24 hours - found too much ash on the grates. Anybody got any suggestions?

Are you filling the stove up to the top of the brick?
Shake till you see a few hot ambers fall in the ash pan.
How often are you shaking it down?

Mine has been lit for about a week. Get it going with a good bed of burning coal, fill up the hopper to the top, and let it go. I leave the adjustable damper on the back set at around 12 o'clock with the front vents closed. I shake it down between 12 and 15 hours. Just shake it until you see red coals dropping into the ash pan. When it gets colder, I will get the fire cranking with more air. Takes some getting used too, but don't get discouraged.

Thank you for your reply - finding out that coal stoves take a little getting used to. Also- I was not putting enough coal in.
