Let me start by saying I have been using coal for over 5yrs now and Parents did for 20+. We have always used a dealer called Kreges Coal or some call them Peoples coal. Now I have had some issues with the coal having junk in it and wrong size (Using Rice) so I am looking for a good dealer in the area. I don't mind picking up coal but know no one. Also don't know what is better bags or loose.
I have a 8x8 Shed closed in on 3 sides with a great roof for storage. Now I have had as much as 5 tons loose in the bin and worked fine. So any advice would be great and also while I am at it. My coal stove has had tons of problems (skipping the drama here) but seems really rusty and beat up looking for a good Harman dealer also.
Zip code is 18330 (Effort PA)
Thanks Jeremy Costenbader

Assuming this problem just started and isn't an ongoing issue have you contacted them about your complaints? Depends on the company but if you have a larger company the people in charge may not be aware of quality issues because they may never actually see the product.
As far as the wrong size was it mixed with rice or just the wrong size? Rule number one when going to new house is before you open the gate is to look in the bin at what size they have to make sure you're not dumping a load of coal into a house they can't use. Never did that in 15 years myself. I only say new house because I knew the size every customer used. I could tell you to this day and I haven't delivered in about 2 years.

That won't make difference if its coming from the same place, loose is much cheaper especially in PA.Also don't know what is better bags or loose.

being you are going to be buying it right from the coal breakers here is a list of breakers and might be cheaper for you
even with you time & gas also call them and see if you can get a delivery from any of them up to you good luck
The better Coal Quality would be these breakers below
Thanks for the info, I got some good info and have to check it all out. I have one more question if you guys don't mind.
I got some bags of coal and I am going though about 1 to 1/2 bags a day on my stove. Keeping the temp at 70. Sound about right? They are 40 pound bags. Now I know its not that cold out but have been at night between 40-45 the last week. I am just trying to think how much I will need for the rest of the season.
Thanks agian Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, a few questions about your burn rate.. First, how large is your house? Is it well insulated and are the windows old or new?
Do you have a barometric damper installed in the chimney flue pipe?? If not this is probably the major problem. Without a barometric damper controling the draft, the chimney will pull most of the heat out of the stove body.
Look through the forum, there are several threads on the use of a barometric damper.
