Just built two masonry chimneys side by side, one to vent a parlor stove the other to vent boiler in basement. stainless steel caps on both. Went to tear down scaffolding and noticed rust looking substance on the poured concrete cap!
Any ideas on what it is and how to prevent it ?

Thank you for your input!!

Muriatic acid should remove it, it is usually available at the hardware stores.

Thank you for your observations, however, the question still remains what is causing it ?

Trimmer, You have the answer there! There is no way we can come up with the correct answer, sitting here. Did you leave a handful of nails or something up there? Did you pour the concrete cap or is it factory? Do they have rebar in them? Is it, in deed , rust? Or bird droppings?
Can you see the rust from 100 feet away?
