Just opened my 10th bag of Hudson rice coal, when pouring it into a 5 gal pail there were 1"x 1" chunks in it since I was topping off a 3/4 full pail I picked out the big pieces in case they would clog my LL Pioneer. The coal in this bag was soaking wet and alot of it looks more like black mud. My tarp blew of today with the wind and rain so my 4tons got a little wet. The next bag was fine. Will go through this bag on the weekend see whats up. any suggestions. :?:

It'll burn wet, less dust and might burn better according to some here.

Your title for this threads were fighting words but I would be angry too if my coal looked like mud was mixed in. My coal came bagged and very wet but it didn't have any mud or large pieces in it. In fact now that it has sat for a while the coal is a little wet but not dripping so I have no dust at all. Wet coal will burn fine.

I wasn't too concerned about the wet coal as I was about the big pieces and that it might jam the the feeder.

You may want to make a screen to put over the hopper and pour the coal through it , to screen out the larger pieces. or pour the coal into a 5-gallon pail with the screen over it,,, outdoors... to keep the dust down..

A 1"x1" piece would definitely not go through your stoker.

That what I thought, I always use a 5 gal bucket anyway. That bag that had the big chunks in I'll screen through chicken wire. I've got 149 bags left I hope I don't get anymore like that

I dealt with Hudson for ages, the sizing on their coal has always been consistent to the point of being ridiculous. I haven't been over there in a few years so I can only guess they have a third party bagging it. That is most likely where the larger pieces came from, a dealer such as myself would immediately notice any problem like that and they would fix it. If it's only one bag the only thing I can say is it will happen... It's impossibble to keep all large pieces out of the small coal as there is simply too many places for it them to get in.
