Coal Tax

Yanche there's a tax the Federal government collects from each mine, it was actually in the news around here lately because PA is supposedly going to be getting much more than they will be putting into it. The western states were not too happy about it but PA has a large percentage of abandoned mines simply because so many of them are so old.. I'd imagine some other states that have a long history of mining will also be benefiting from it.

The tax is not collected for reclamation of working mines. Just the ones where responsibility lies with no one. At least that's my understanding.

Yes, I know the most recent Federal mine legislation changed the way money was allocated. The big coal mining states objected but PA got a much bigger piece of the tax pie. That's what I was searching for but couldn't find it. What I did find and reference was PA's version.

Next county over from us taxes ANY fuel used for home heating, reguardless of who's in the Oval Office.

Suffolk County not only taxes home heating oil, but electricity, natural gas, and wood used to heat homes as well. Ironically, Suffolk County is the only county in the state that imposes a tax these items for heating purposes.

[nb - They do tax coal in Suffolk. Article leaves out coal probably due to lack of interest :D ]

Before everyone blames the Democrats that took over in the mid-90's after decades of Republican rule, find the start date of the fuel tax and see who was in office then.

It doesn't matter who proposed it, passed it or any of that, the damned Democrats are always at fault becuase they are the tax and spenders, don't you know that by now? Geeze, you must hang out with dumb people if you don't know that already, becuase obviously someone has formulated or influenced all your ideas!!

Not what he's saying at all Stephen. He wants to make coal burning by utilities cleaner, which will create jobs. His words were conveniently cut & spliced to change his meaning. I can create a tape of John McCain saying all home coal burners should be arrested & their kids sold into slavery. ;)

BO quote, "So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can — it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted."

Great words for a candidate to use who is a proponent of coal energy.
Really gives the industry an incentive to use coal.

There's no coal fired plants that meet these requirements because the technology doesn't exist yet or in the case of the plant in Florida untested because Florida wants them held responsible if the gas escapes which is a risk no power company is going to take. By default at the present time his intentions are exactly as stated. Open your eyes, all these green forms of energy are subsidized now while coal is heavily penalized. Coal is the cornerstone of this countries energy supply and further legislation will inevitably drive the cost of energy up for the consumer, there's simply no way that can avoided if Barack's energy plan is implemented.

Coal Industry Wary of Obama Energy Plan

Richard S. wrote:That's the opinion of one person, I've read Obama's energy plan have you?

http://l.barackobama.com/issues/pdf/Ene ... Sheet.pdf/

Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology: Coal is our nation’s most abundant energy
source and is a critical component of economic development in China, India and other growing
economies. Obama believes that the imperative to confront climate change requires that we
prevent a new wave of traditional coal facilities in the U.S. and work aggressively to transfer
low-carbon coal technologies around the world. In the U.S. Senate, Obama successfully
increased funding by $200 million for carbon storage in the fiscal year 2008 budget resolution.
As president Obama will significantly increase the resources devoted to the commercialization
and deployment of low carbon coal technologies. Implementing these technologies as soon as
possible is vital to the transition to a clean energy economy and will help other nations
dependent on coal reduce their emissions as well. In addition to addressing new facilities,
Obama will work to ensure that existing coal facilities are retrofitted with carbon capture and
sequestration technology as soon as it is commercially available. Obama will use whatever
policy tools are necessary, including standards that ban new traditional coal facilities, to ensure
that we move quickly to commercialize and deploy low carbon coal technology. Obama’s
stringent cap on carbon will also make it uneconomic to site traditional coal facilities and
discourage the use of existing inefficient coal facilities
.

In other words unless they can meet the standards set down they are going out of business. There is no mention of the amont of money to be invested here or elsewhere. McCain is the only one who has publicly stated financing for coal.

From his energy Speech Portsmouth, NH | October 08, 2007:

And we must find a way to stop coal from polluting our atmosphere without pretending that our nation's most abundant energy source will just go away. It won't. It will also require taking steps to ensure that China's coal emissions are curbed as well. Already, some coal pollution from China's dirty plants is making its way to California. That's why we must invest in clean coal technologies that we can use at home and share with the world. Until those technologies are available, I will rely on the carbon cap and whatever tools are necessary to stop new dirty coal plants from being built in America - including a ban on new traditional coal facilities.
