I Have installed an energy King wood/coal boiler in my un- insulated shed near the house. (50') of insulated pex. I have 12 feet of chimney a 0011 taco circulator to pump it to my existing boiler return line. I don’t seem to be getting the heat out of it the oil fired boiler is about 20 degrees cooler. I have ordered a plate heat exchanger hoping this will make a difference as well as baro damper on the stack. Will the damper make better use of the heat and burn more of the coal? I seem to be wasting a lot. And will the exchanger make a difference in the temperatures. I need some kind of thermometer to check the pipe temperatures. The gauges on the boiler don’t match.

Are you getting a bed of coal burning?
Maybe you are circulating too fast, it can't hold the heat in the boiler?

You will have to get some temperature reading on your water pipes/stove to see what is happening, could be many factors.

you can install a valve on the pump discharge to slow down the water give it a chance to pick up the heat

I had originaly a 13gpm 007 pump and switched because I was told I want moving enough water. I am going to get one of those point and shoot thermometers to test the pipe temps.
