DVC 500 stove just arrived I am following the directions in the owners manual regarding start up I understand the options of the blower fans regarding heat output but in the manual nothing is said about the feed rate. Do you leave the feed rate at 3 all the time? Am I to assume the higher # is pushing the feed rate faster? and providing more fuel to the fire. When starting the fire why wouldn't I want the feed rate to be on the lowest setting to get the coal started and then move the feed rate up to get the desired heat output and to then start feeding the fire? Also any suggestions on keeping the lowest heat output on warm days what settings would you use?

I would turn the feed down until it starts to light, then back up. It sometimes takes a while to light and get a good burn, be patient.

Settings - Some are trial and error depending on how it feeds, you can always increase or decrease the feed rate to match your heating demands, as long you are not pushing hot coals off the end when it is on a full burn, you are good. 3 is probably a good starting point.

Bought my dvc last year. Starting a fire is esay.
Use 2 or 3 coal mice. Set feed rate on 3 to start fire, and room temp. on 75'. Once you get a good fire going, change feed rate to 1 and never change it. I burned my stove on feed rate of 1 all last winter and never had a problem getting heat or
burning stove at a low rate. I always burn my stove on the temp. setting. I control my stove with these settings:

Warm day. feed rate 1...............temperature at 55'..................room temp at low (room temp dial controls your
fan speed)

Cold day feed rate 1.................temperature 70' ...................room temp at high

The dvc is the easiest stove to control. Follow these guidelines and you should have no problems.

TCoal...what was your coal useage with those settings last year, what size home is it in, and are you using the DVC to do most of the heating of your house or just supplementing to heat that particular room?

Thanks,
Craig

My home is a two story, 2100 sq feet. Burned 4 ton of coal, stove heats entire house. Heat biil averaged 75.00 per month
(gas heat only for gas dryer and hot water. Heat was never on last winter. Had one problem. I had to watch basement pipes didn't freeze because of lack of furnace being on. Basement on cold days would get down to 36'.Plan on installing a gas
brick heater in basement to for colder days to insure pipes don't freeze.
My stove is in family room, first floor. House is fairly open heat circulates nicely. No fans used
