It's funny when you are a kid you take the old folks for granted, the information the try to pass on to you. Anyhow, my grandfather told me of going into the coal mines in Rhode Island and walking around in them, does anyone know any information about them? I believe they are in the Newport RI. area

I saw that on an anthracite map of deposits in the US a couple of years ago.

Some old stuff.

If you read all that stuff, you will find it wasn't great coal though.

There were coal mines in the Portsmouth area of Rhode Island, in fact my son and I installed a sump pump in his basement years ago and once we jackhammered through the cement floor we had to continue digging through a vein of coal. Some of it was shale but there was quite a bit of anthracite. I took it home and burned it!

If you search for Anthracite and "Narragansett Basin" you'll get some hits, mostly geologic information, but no pictures of old mines or breakers.
