Found that I have some terra cotta time damage in the top 2' of the fireplace 10" x 10" flue, looks like some minor surface scaling that is 1/8" deep. Since I don't use the fireplace and to stop further weathering until the spring, was thinking about putting a piece of 1/4" plexiglass over the top of the entire flue with some rtv around the terra cotta tile top edge to hold it in place. The damper in the house would be closed.

In doing this any potential fireplace downdraft into the house from the adjacent coal flue would also be stopped.

Any bad experiences with doing this sealing off thing as proposed ?

If I did it I'd use sheet metal.

+1 made it fit over the top and sides and just placed a weight on top.

Or if I had that 1/4 Plexiglas I would just use that. Since its free. Hell a piece of plywood would work till spring.

SOOOOO..after hearing the suggestions on this thread we went to a couple stores to look for a piece of stainless since that is the best. Could'nt find any, found a $12 piece of plexiglass but ya know I'm CHEAP, so I passed. So here I am a 1/2 hour ago , walking my dogs, and my Obama neighbor (signs still up) is throwing out a dog cage with the 2' x 3' bottom pan being STAINLESS!!! Blam, this baby was scoffed up. Has a nice 1" lip that will serve as a nice drip edge. So it's stainless!
