By weight or by volume? I think they're going by weight.

They go by weight. After burning last years coal and looking at my ash pile I'll bet the volume was reduced to 20% or so.Coal makes a lot of ash,It ain't like wood.

Hi Catdog,, I can't figure out what you mean in your title . 80%-90% of what??? Is the ashpan 80-90% full after a hopper full of coal burns up?? That is as close as I can figure you mean..

If you burn 50# of coal, you will get about 8-10# of ash, not all the coal burns completely, so add the weight of some partially burnt coal to the normal 12% or so ash content..

But the VOLUME of the ash in the pan will be a lot more than the equivalent volume of coal by weight.. Ash is like lava rock,, full of holes, so it is pretty light by volume..

I noticed my ash is heavier than last year, I am still burning Blashack bagged rice.

My garbage man noticed too, he left me a note saying"Heavy" on my ash can, I weighed it and it hit 98lbs! I never weighed it before, but he never complained before either.

Guess I will split it up into smaller bags for him.

I don't understand the problem either, figure for each 100 pounds of coal burned you will have a full ash bucket.
