A co worker told me he can run his Harmen coal stoker with a programmable thermostat that he bought at Home Depot.
My question is.Can I run my LL Pioneer with a thermostat bought from Home Depot .Has anyone even tried this?

If you stove came with a standard thermostat that runs on 24VAC 2-Wire hookup, then Yes.
If you just have the Rheostats, NO.

I run my Keystoker with a Programmable one. You will get a bit more precise control, but still may have the large temp. swings, since it only controls the Feeder on/off based on temperature. Plus, it takes time for stoves to react to temperature changes, most don't use the setback features, since it takes so long for the stoves to heat up and cool down.

The CoalTrol is a Control System with logic based on feed rates, blower rate, temperature rates and a bunch of other stuff specifically programmed for coal stoves and a ton of other features (go read the V3 Features in the CoalTrol section)

To my knowledge LL stoves do not come with a Tstat Relay, you will need this to allow your stove to be controlled by a Tstat. This will simply start and stop the stoker at whatever feed rate is dialed in. A Coal-Trol actually controls the feed rate, and blower speed as Dave said, definitely worth the price of admission. :)
