I've just started using rice coal I purchased at Lutz coal yard in Schwenksville, PA. It burns very different from Centralia brand coal I used for about a month and a half. Some of the coal is brittle and breaks up easily by hand, also burns faster. The size of the coal varies much in a handful.

I need to purchase more bagged coal soon. There are only 2 suppliers in my area that sell bagged. I just checked price of the Centralia coal (from C.R. Dampman, Pennsburg, PA) and it works out to $350 per ton!

So I am thinking maybe I need to adjust my stoker for the coal from Lutz, or rent a bigger truck and drive further to get good coal. I had intended to buy 1/2 ton at a time.

Questions, comments, suggestions are welcome! I am new to coal! Just been burning since Oct 1.

I have a keystoker koker coming and purchased 4 tons from Lutz's. The forum people say it is good coal. Mine is the same as yours (some pieces brittle) but have not burnt it yet. They say it is blaschak....interested in what other say as I hope to have mine burning in a month also! If I find anything else I'll pass it along!

Machinist, hey I'm new to coal burning so I've been shopping around the area for good prices and good quality of coal. I just recently bought a half ton of nut coal from c.r. dampman's for $113.00. I don't live too far from the yard so one saturday I took my little dakota down and they loaded me up. It's a little extra work, as far as unloading it from the truck and filling the bin, but for the price I cant complain. I know the coal they supply is from south tamaqua. I cant complain about it either. My dad has been burning with it for years and so has another guy that I work with. They both like the coal from dampman's. What size coal are you burning? Do you know the ash % of the centrailia? The % from dampmans is around 7 or 8. Check the net and call around the area. I think my father in law gets his rice coal from lutz's and he has had no complaints.

I wonder if Dampmans charge less for nut. I was quoted over the phone $8.75 per 50 lb bag for rice.
My first purchase of coal was from dampmans. It was Centralia coal co. It's size was very consistent, very shiny.

Lutz hauls his own coal but I don't know where it comes from. It is supposedly good quality coal.

What is bothering me about Lutz's coal is that some of it easily breaks by hand and sometimes has a dull appearance.
I seem to remember someone had mentioned that bituminous coal is like that.

Bought 3 tons over the summer and I have to say it is beautiful coal...some does break in hand but overall it is a little shiny and sounds like glass when you drop it on itself....guess I'll find out soon enough...and will update you!

Lutz gets his coal from Blaschaks in Mahoney City. I asked one of the Lutz brothers when he was delivering it, if this coal is strip mined. He said emphatically "NO! This ain't no boot leg shtuff, this is deep mined stuff". I asked another employee when they were delivering the boiler Lutz gets his coal from Tamaque. This guy said NO. Lutz is real particular about the quality of coal, and will drive further to get the good stuff.

I personally do not have any experience, or know any body else, who burns coal or is an expert in coal quality.

Lutz Buys From Blaschak which is a Suface mining Company aswell as South Tamaqe coal pockets Neither one are Deep mining companies. The Term boot Legging Is a Deep mining term. Not a Surface Mining Term Look at the links it will explain the boot legging term
