Hand Fed Coal Boiler: New Yorker WC-90

Post by LeonMSPT » Tue. Dec. 23, 2008 11:20 pm

So, someone else opens their cleanout door too? I was a little afraid to mention it, sounds kind of stupid... :)

I have a New Yorker, with a combustion blower. Was going through 40# of coal in about 5-6 hours. Bear in mind, 3,500 SF apartment building with a heated 750 SF basement... 90K BTU boiler in a building sized for 130K. Pushed the limits some with the chimney. New Yorker calls for 8x8 masonry with 6 inch connector... or "equivalent"... contractor and I agreed that a 35 foot tall 6x6 stainless was "close enough"... pulls like a tornado...

Burning wood, limiting the fire by cutting the air led to SMOKE, lots of SMOKE. Also, boiler had a really hard time to come up to temperature... I didn't like it, nasty thing. So I burned some free coal, the best kind I think. Good heat and fire on coal, but ate coal like it was the last supper and dessert was being served.

So, I took the old timer's advice... he said, "Break the draft dummy, open the cleanout. If the draft is that fearsome, you've got nothing to worry about things backing into the basement. Just keep an eye on things, when the weather changes... until you can set it up proper.

I am thinking "T"s instead of elbows, with block off plates in the ends to facilitate cleanout... want to clean or inspect it? Just unscrew the screws holding the plug in, and look in there with a light... barometric damper in the vertical pipe, just below the horizontal into the chimney.

Anybody with thoughts on piping chimney connection with "T"s as opposed to using elbows?

Thanks,
Leon

Lot's of people do with no problem. It sure makes cleaning easier. The only issue is of you have borderline draft. An elbow is not as restrictive as a tee. Don't quote me, but I'm thinking an elbow has the resistance of 4 feet of straight pipe and a tee is the same as 11 feet of straight pipe. Even if my numbers are off, an elbow flows easier than a tee.

Could someone post pics ont his? I have a 35' clay lined chimney. I have barro but it never opens. I have clean out door about 3-4ft below thimblem where stove pipe enters. It is currently sealed with furnace cement but can be easily opened. I have tried to prop open the barro and put a small desk fan blowing on low to see if this makes a difference on stove temps. it doesnt really. I do notice occassional the stove will fluctuate about 50-75 degrees when pushing same amount of coal same on\off times and outside.

Curious because I am using about 65-85lbs per day of rice and outside temps are 20's

Sounds like your weight is not set correctly or it is stuck or you just don't have a lot of draft in your chimney. My chimney is 30-35' interior and it is open most of the time....have you ever checked your draft with a gauge?
