I have a guy that is going to put a hole through my foundation and run triple wall SS up the side with everything needed. Going up 2 stories and a few feet for attic height, then a few feet above roof.
I think he said its about 30 feet of pipe. He gave me a price of $2300
Is that good?

He might be using a much better quality product than available at the 'box stores'. Did you get a brand name for the product he is installing?? Is he using SS for the elbows, and other pieces of flue pipe?? Is he installing a Barometric damper at the same time,, if not you want one installed with the setup.

What is the warantee on the products and the labor??? If you are not handy,, this is very important..

The stove has some sort of plate that is supposed to close off all the heat going up. what is that? Doesnt the damper go inside the house? he is only doing the chimney up.

Re-calculating the install again in my head , plus your research on the parts cost, makes me realize I miscalculated the price fairness. It does sound like theres about a K in labor cost there. It might be a wee bit steep on second look for my blood. but again like it has been said apples to apples... there is some SS triple wall stuff that is quite pricy out there so.... ;)

Ok guys. This installer just upped the price $330. I told him there is a soffet on the side of the house about 8-10" he said it will take two offsets which will add $330

With your guys help I may just do this job on my own. Now his price is up to $2630 and I a VERY worried he is the kind of guy who is going to add for more stuff when the job gets half done.
What do you think?
If I post a picture of the side of my house can you guys point out anything I may over look for me if I order everything myself.

My hardest part is going through my foundation. But I think if I drill a series of small holes with a hammer drill and knock it out it should be fine.

Does anyone know how far away the pipe is from the siding on a standard install with standard straps? I ask because I am wondering if he could just go straight up if the pipe is far enough away from the side. That way I wont need to offset around the overhang.
Thanks!

Is the foundation a poured concrete one or block construction? The hammer drill method is the ticket in my book. The instructions from the duravent folks were quite detailed toward the do-it-yourselfer. see section 20 reguarding the 14 1/2" hole for the thimble thru the wall.

I would probably rent the hammer drill and bit.

Anyone know about the offset question. Is it possible to just go out farther with the straps on the siding and go straight up, rather then trying to offset around an overhang on the roof? I think the overhang is about 8-10"

What do I think? I think it's odd that you had to tell him there's a soffit. That says to me he quoted the original price without even coming to your house to look at the job. I would be worried, too.
