Below are pictures of my latest attempt to contain the dust when pouring coal into the hopper.
The sheet metal part is secured along the perimeter of the hopper with magnet strips. The orange part is a rubber flapper that in bolted to the sheet metal. Once I swap out the screws that are sticking up, I can just place the hopper lid on top of this panel, so removal of the DCS panel is not required.
The bucket idea was borrowed from someone on this forum. Just tip the bucket of coal inserting the pipe into the hole and empty your coal.
This works pretty good.
Another thought I had was to get one of those rubber bellows , like the ones used on the gas pumps, mount it on the bucket pipe and just have a hole in the top of the sheet metal panel.

Awesome innovation two questions is that a snap on lid or a screw on type? I've been thinking of doing something simmilar but looking for a screw on lid 5 gal bucket and haven't had any luck. The dust issue that I have isn't when putting the coal in the hopper but when I dump the ash pan. I recently finished enclosing my "coal shed" and the dust is going to be an issue. Are you doing anything "innovative" with this issue?

As far as the ash disposal I am dumping it on a trail I use for plowing access in the winter. It gives me traction for the four-wheeler.and the dust is going to be an issue. Are you doing anything "innovative" with this issue?
The bucket has a snap on lid. I leave one tab unsnapped to allow me to remove the lid for refill. I have not had the lid fall off yet. (fingers crossed) That would suck Maybe this weekend I will go on the hunt for a screw on lid.is that a snap on lid or a screw on type?

Check your local swimming pool supply house. We get our chlorine in tubs with screw on lids. Perhaps they save some for you or post a note asking for some old containers from their customers.

I have used an Ace Hardware ice melter bucket that has a really nice snap on lid. It only has 2 snaps and is very easy to snap on and off. I have used this bucket for about 5 years. First with corn and now with coal and I have never had the lid come unsnapped when loading any stove. I was a bit leary at first but it has proven itself over the years to be reliable.James Goodine wrote:is that a snap on lid or a screw on type?
