Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Yes

Post by thepamperedlady » Fri. Dec. 05, 2008 1:51 pm

I just had to write because my family and I just LOVE the heat we are getting from this stoker. Leisure Line is the best.

I am heating 2000 square feet, two levels. First level, a toasty 71 degrees. Second level, a very comfortable 68.

We have never slept so comfortably (heat goes down to 70/67 at night). No more furnace that kicks on and off, making us kick the blankets on and off (and that was keeping it at 63 at night!!!)

I have never had so many compliments on heating before! Everyone was so leery when they heard "coal". Now that they see how easy the stove runs, how warm the house is, and how little money I am spending to heat, they are sold. My parents went from electric heat & wood stove, to two coal stokers (one free standing and one fireplace insert). They are getting them tomorrow and are very excited. I cannot believe my mother went from "no way" (and with lots of attitude) to getting two of them!!! We will be going over after the install to see how the air flows and such; lend a hand if needed.

It is pretty impressive when your fifteen year old daughter, who is usually only talking about "girly stuff", comes home from school and says how happy she is to be walking around so warm and comfortable without layers of clothing. Now that says something!

We do have one room, above our garage, at the farthest end of the house, that has large french doors, which stays around 66 during the day. Not unlivable at all considering the environment of the room. We had to put one heat grate, toward the back of the house, with a fan to direct the heat. Other than that, the heat naturally rises up the front stairs and we use a ceiling fan, on reverse, to distribute the heat on the second level.

I just wish I would have had the clearances to put a coal stoker furnace in the garage to heat my tenant apartment also; would have been NO MORE OIL!!! Ce la vie. At least the oil is a write-off.

They were all getting sick of hearing me talk about coal stoves (you all know how it is when you are going through the process on deciding on a stove) and the technology behind it. Now, they see the light

Happy Heating!

Emily

Glad to hear it. I must admit when I first heard about the coal sotve idea from a family friend I was also skepitcal but even beofre I had mine installed I went to salesman. Now that my coal stove's problem has been fixed (with many thanks to the contributors to this forum) I am back to salesman. Within a few days I have no complaints and finally I don't have to hear the wife tell me how cold the house is.

Good to hear you are happy with the stove.
I have a Leisure Line Pioneer in my dining room and my family really likes it. Its not that the house is cold (72*) but there is always someone standing or laying in front of the stove soaking up the heat. (dog included)

enjoy the heat all winter!

Glad to see you're excited & welcome Emily! It really is FUN beating old man winter & keeping the family warm for much less money than most other people spend to freeze! ;)

Same thing here. People think your neighborhood is going to look like something out of a Dickens novel in England with black smoke everywhere, or old timers who remember shoveling tons of coal and ash every winter to heat a poorly insulated house.

Modern coal heating could be nothing further from the truth.

djackman: That seems to be exactly what people think. I don't blame the old timers for doing that though. We are starting to see what a rotten economy looks like and it looks like coal, but a lot cleaner now!!! Now that I know how great and even the heat is, I would do coal no matter what. It is worth a little work. Even my husband, who was DEAD set against coal last year (his parents had the old time stoves and the mess that came along with it), keeps commenting on how great this stove is. He even thanked the Lord last night in our prayers. It is getting pretty cold around here and we are not feeling it; what a blessing.

gambler: I am the same way. The house is not cold at all but I love sitting on my sofa with my feet near the stove; it's the best. I have both the dogs beds on either side of the hearth and they love it as well. When the days are chillier, my chihuahua can be found laying on a certain spot of the area rug. If you put your hand there, you can feel the heat blowing on him; he's not stupid :)

billlindey: I have actually been told, by several people, that I should sell these stoves. I've learned SO much, in large part to this forum, that I've actually talked several people into it without them even feeling the heat or seeing the stoves.

Thanks Guys!

Not trying to sound sexist Emily, but there are so few 'Handy" women on this forum that even look at their coal stove that it's refreshing to hear from you!

My 36 year old daughter just got a Harman TLC that her husband wanted & now he has nothing to do with it!! (my daughter is very much like her father &, while she won't admit it......likes the challenge/satisfaction of running it right)

I applaud you!

Hello Devil505

Thank you for that compliment. I do not take it to be "sexist" at all. I find that there are too many women that are not willing to get their hands dirty any more. It's a shame.

My parents taught us to camp (and all the "hard living" that goes along with it), fish, chop wood, shoot a gun (bb, but better than nothing), learn as much as we can and apply ourselves with that knowledge.

That being said, before I plopped down about $4000.00 on a stove, I was damn well going to know what I was doing and get the right stove for us (along with some help from up above. There is NO way I should have gotten a Leisure Line in this area any time this year, but I did and am so thankful). I looked into wood, coal, pellet, furnace, stove, etc.

I do have to admit two things. 1: I am cheap. 2: I, as well as your daughter who will not admit it, LOVE a challenge and the satisfaction of accomplishing the "impossible". Put them together; COAL it is for me 8-) No one was going to tell me I was wrong and couldn't make it work. Although running a stoker is quite easy, there is enough work involved for me to feel like I am "heating" my family, versus the oil is.

Take Care!
Emily
