A friend of mine just obtained an old Janson coal furnace. It is complete, but is very rusted. The rust is just surface rust, nothing is so bad that it is rotted out. I've checked the electrical controls and everything will work. Combustion blower is also ok, The convection fan has to be replaced, but thats not a problem, already has one.

My question is what is the best way to bring the looks of this old furnace back to respectability? What would you guys recommend in dealing with the rust and what would you recommend for the kind of paint to use, both inside the fire box and the whole outside of the furnace?

Can't remember if it is Janson or Jenson, but I do know that US Stove had the manual for it.

Anybody feel like giving up your refurbishing secrets and talents? Would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks
JB

Inside, will burn off anyway, but some of use the High Temp Engine Paint from a Auto Store for the outside. You can get it in colors too.

Thanks WNY,

That makes sence to me. What would you do about the rust on the outside, just a little wire brushing or maybe use some "Rust-mort" on it, or does the engine paint make that not necessary?

If you really want it nice find a local sandblasting company . Cheaper than buying all the equipment just for 1 stove . Then some high temp paint . Dave
