A lot of members on here own both. I think the Alaska is more like a furnace, with the heat jacket and larger blower(s).

The Hyfire would require a heat jacket if you are going to connect to your furnace.

I made my own heat jacket and added a extra blower, since my furnace doesn't have one (just old style convection).

I have an Alaska 140 and would recommend it. Don't know much about the Hyfire. Like WNY said, the 140 is a furnace. The air jacket is part of the unit. You put a plenum on the top and hook it up to your existing system. I bought mine new this year and love it. I haven't burned a drop of oil since I put it in. I'm heating ~2200 sqft with one side burning and it has no problem heating my house.

I was wondering, how much coal are you using per day in the 140? I just got one and am tweaking it. I'm trying it with both burners. Do you have the thermostat set up? I can't compare with the Highfire, but really like the 140 setup. It took some setting, but now I'm comfortable with it.

on the Hyfire I, I do have the Coaltrol (I converted it) and probably use about 50-60#'s+/day approx. especially when it's really cold, below 20. Otherwise, 30-40#/day.

We went thru about 6 ton last year to heat the big old house, but NO Heat jacket last year, I had one made for this year. It have helped a lot this year, moving much more heat upstairs and it doesn't have to run as hot to get more heat out.

I'm using about 70lbs a day. I have the top knob on the black box on about 3 1/2 and the bottom on 1. I tried burning both burners thinking I could burn less coal because it wouldn't kick on to high burn as often. I was wrong. I ended up using about 140lbs/day. One burner has been able to keep my house at a very comfortable 70 - 72 even during the two days last week when the temps were in the single digits. I don't know if I really needed the second burner but it's peace of mind if I do need it or if the other burner breaks.

I like my 140 and have had no problems with it. I run it for factory heat, normally both burners flat out 24/7 for the the entire heating season, only light it once a year. Not running it this season because natgas is quite a bit cheaper...for now.

BC, Hows things going with the 140??, 140# a day with both burners, yes in deed, I seem to be using a bit more this year than last , probably due to the temps being a bit colder than last year at this time.
How do you load your stove? I use an ash bucket I turned into a coal pail. I don't know what it weighs but I seem to be loading 1 1/2 or 2 a day.. I fully fill the unit on Fridays and then top up a bit on Sundays,,

Did you make out all right in the ice storm?? a couple house flashes but power styed on got about 7" to 9" of snow then it turned to rain (ice) then back again.. We were lucky on this one..

140's burning great :) Still hard to believe that small fire heats my whole house. 72* in here now relaxing watching football. The ice storm didn't affect us as bad as you got it. We got a little ice and about 4" of snow. Made me think though that I need a backup power source. I'm loading with bags. I was going to build a bin but found bagged coal cheaper than Champlain Coal. I burn about 2 bags (80lbs) a day.

I have a hyfire II and love it because I can run 1 side at a time. Awesome!! I burn about 6oz per hr on idle with one side burning. I have my max feed rate at 40 and am burning around 6.5 to 7 lbs an hr. keeps my house nice and toasty. Stove is in the basement and I have installed custom duct work to the 1st floor. when it is feeding decent basement even stays warm from the radiant heat.

Thanks for the pics where does the pipe go out the top. Would I be able to put a plenum on top like a oil hot air furnace or isn`t the blower fan strong enough? That was my problem with my utility stove it couldn`t move enough air through the ducting to do any good.

Looks like you could put any type of top/plenum on it to tie it into your duct work. Not sure if it is removable or not.

My Hyfire has a removable top, I first cut an 8" hole and ran one duct up into the living room for the past 2 years, this year build a heat jacket with 2 - 8" ducts and seems to work 100% better in capturing the heat and moving it upstairs.
