replacement shaker grate

replacement shaker grate

PostBy: MajorDan On: Tue Dec 16, 2008 10:24 pm

I have an old coal stove with a round 14" cast iron shaker grate that has broken into several pieces.
Can anyone refer me to a store, catalog, dealer or other source that might help me find a replacement shaker grate?
any leads or help will be greatly appreciated.

This site has grates in the "wood and coal stove parts" section.

thanks. I've checked there and in fact bought their largest round shaker grate but it only measured 12 3/4" and is just small enough to fall through the 'ledge' it is supposed to rest upon. had to send it back.

Here is the one you need but I don't have a clue where you might find it. It is a shaker/dump grate and was made by the Cowanesque valley Iron Works in Cowanesque, PA. It has No. 0 S.D. Gratering stamped right on it and the dump handle was made by the Indiana Fdry. Co. in Indiana, Pa and has No. 0 S.D. Drawcentergrate stamped on it.

I have good pics of both if you need them.

Your stove was made by the Gold Marc company right here in Monticello, NY and the model is "Monticello" Circa 1980.

I have one listed in the For Sale section right here.

Please keep us informed if you do locate a good replacement.

coalvet -
I found that model, bought it and it measured 12 3/4" diameter and was just small enough to fall through the opening instead of sitting on the rim of the opening. very frustrating. apparently the dimensions are a 'pre-shrunk' value. unfortunately the next size I have found is 16" - too large.

amazing! the stove I have has 'Monticello' on the front though no other information. I could use the other pictures you mentioned. I will now start researching this lead. Much appreciated.

If anyone knows anything about the Cowanewque Valley Iron Works, I'd appreciate any information

If you find one that fits please let me know! I have the same beast. I bet you could have a steel ring made that would fit right over the one welded into the stove, with a 12-3/4 I.D. It looks like the max. size O.D. of a ring that could fit through the door could be 16". I like that idea, you could reduce the output of the stove that way a little bit. These stoves put out the heat!
I just brazed my grate that had a crack in it ever since I got the stove. How many pieces is your grate in? I'm in NJ, if you want it brazed up, let me know, until you find something intact.
Dan

P.S.--- this one says 13- 1/4" might be big enough? I can't measure now due to a bed of coal in mine.

My stove only has the Monticello plate on the front and the rear tag is gone. I have asked Dann757 if his has the tag on the rear but never got an answer.
I do know where there is another one locally and will try to see if it has a tag on the back left upper corner where mine was.

That round grate looks a lot like the one in my Alaska Kodiak. I don't know if it's the same size, and cant measure it right now while it's burning. But you could possibly try calling Alaska (570) 387-0260 and see if they could tell you the dimensions of the one they use . If it's close, they might sell you one as a replacement part.

I emailed Bon Tool which seems to have thousands of items; reply was negative, they only do tool castings now. I found a # for Cowanesque Valley Iron Works, 814 367 2218. Haven't called, it might be another long shot.....

Dann757-
I got the 13 1/4" grate (which measures 12 3/4") and had a steel insert created to hold it inside the stove.
seemed like a fine idea but I can't actually shake the thing to get the ash down. it doesn't budge when loaded with coal. moves OK when mostly unweighted. the insert does cut down on the heat produced but I don't know if it is because of the insert or because the fire is choked with ash around the edges. I can move the shaker and get some airflow that way but most of the holes around the rest of the grate are clogged with ash.
very frustrating.
sounds like we both need replacements though at least you have yours in workable order for now. If I find something I'll be sure to post.
