Are the fumes harmful at all? I had some melted snow in my bucket with the coal and when I threw it in, MAN!! what a puff of sulfur the whole basement was full. My 3 year old was down here and I got worried and brought him up.

That's what you get for throwing water on the fire! :)
I wouldn't worry about a puff of smoke. Just open a window next time to air it out. Be sure you have CO detectors.

I would be more concerned about cracking the grates. Be careful with the wet or snowy coal or it could cost you a few bucks.

You won't crack a Gibraltar grate Very Very Heavy and thick one weighs 15 lbs 18" L X 4"W 2.5 " x 2.5 "Thick round
center Body. The fingers Are 1" X 1" sq. Thick 4" W Top Bottom to top is 2" x 1" x 1"sq T. All Cast Iron. I threw alot of went coal on Fire Over The Years Never Had one crack. Remember there will always be a layer of ash or burning coal on top of the grates all the time. Or at least there should be ;)
