I keep getting a popping noise coming from the carpet on my stoker. Every time it goes to push it I hear it. Its running fine, just making that noise. Shall I leave it or halt all operations and tear it apart?

piece of coal stuck under around the stoker mechanism/carpet, it might break up, but sometimes you have to dissassemble.....

^ Thanks. I will watch it for another hour.

I have 70 lbs of coal in the hopper and my back hurts at the moment.. great. If I have to take it apart I will take a picture of the problem for other members to see.

It should be okay, it will just keep making the noise, I know mine will for quite a while,

On my hyfire, you can pull the carpet out without emptying the hopper, just drop the stoker and it slide out from the back, I work it back and forth a bit and slide it back in....My Keystoker is a job to disassemble.

Matt, Just take the nut off the end of the threaded rod that drives the carpet, push the carpet in and out to it's limits, then reassemble should eliminate the noise. If not you might have a gear box issue or loose hardware on the box that holds the gearbox to the plenum (there area any of 8 screws that can be loose).

OK experts.

I turned the stove off and let it cool down. I removed 80 lbs of coal (blah).

The problem was there was 1/2 an inch of very fine coal particles under the carpet. There were a few big pieces that were scraping. I removed them all, vaccumed everything out (under the stoker grate too for maintenance), filled it back up and relit it. I had an entire grate of burning coal in 10 mins, that was HOT HOT HOT and neat to see haha. Some were falling off into the ash pan.

I of course turned it down. One hour later I now have a normal burn back and NO scraping sound.

What could be causing all this coal to sit under the carpet? I have only ran 900 lbs thru this since the rebuild.

The low point of all the coal in the hopper is the carpet/pusher.. so the fines migrate to this point, some get burnt, some get around the sides of the pusher and get under it.. just the way it works..
Some coal has more fines, some is very clean and has virtually no fines..

I am thinking about making a wider carpet. It seems that there is 1/8" on both sides for clearance. Maybe making it tighter would help with my problems.

I had that same noise come from my carpet, turns out it was warped. Check the carpet for warpage just to be on the safe side!
