ash dump clean out

Heating 2000 sq feet to an average of 72, two floors with a single floor extension about 65 feet from the stove.
The 503 has yet to cross 350* on the body front above the door.
How is the 503 vented, liner to the top of the chimney or just dumped into the fireplace?

thanks for the picture of the thermometer..I"ll look for one tomorrow.

I too am heating a 4k home but the room that it is located is double story open to the hallway of the upstairs. great to get the heat up there but too much for the stove perhaps. how much coal would you use in a day like today?

Burning about 40 lbs/day.
Today burning about 60 lbs 20* windy 30 mph
House is reasonably insulated and burned about 800 gallons to keep it at 65* with a small wood stove burned for a few hours every day before the coal insert.
500* seems like a good top limit.
Is the smoke shelf sealed?
How big was the fireplace flue? They typicaly run 12x12.

12x12
sealed it the best I could with mineral wool but it's hard to do.
the face of the insert is sealed reasonably well.

Hi george
What most people call the ash clean-out, ash dump, under there fireplace is in reality not a clean out but a vent to allow cool air from your basement to feed the fire in your fire place, rather than have your fireplace draw warm air from your room. I would think you could fill that space in one season if you didn't clean it out. Also I would have a hard time believing that it is not allowing some air to feed your current setup.

internal chimney

a vent rather than a clean out? I was never aware of that, good Idea perhaps, but wonder how it would be kept clear and why the door at the basement is not louvered. Essentially, (I believe, perhaps mistakenly) it acts in the same manner as the identical clean out that is present on the oil flue. Other than some small leakage which may be coming from some very small areas around the unit there is no air coming from the basement whatsoever (it is plugged solid- which takes about 3 weeks perhaps to fill)). this leakage is consistent with what is exppected and required, in normal operation via the louvers on the door. Are you indicating that I am losing draft of creating more?

also, after shaking this morning I find some "chunky" white coals(more than not). Certainly not fine ash like a wood fire. Could close off the damper more (usually burn at 1/2 to 3/4 vent hole exposed) but, naturally, the more draft the more heat this thing puts out. Nut Coal
