Was looking over my stock when I noticed this yellowish stuff on my bags of Blaschak. Has a little white flaky material mixed in.

The bags of coal were a little damp when I put them in the basement and as we stacked them some water actually ran out of the bags.

Almost looks like sulfur secreting out of the bags. I haven't started burning the Blaschak yet.

Any ideas on what this stuff is? I have 2 other tons of coal in bags in the basement but they are not exhibiting this type of material on the outside of them.

Is it possible that it's pollen from being stored outside? It looks like the puddles in fall and the color the ground gets after a rain in pollen season? I have never seem anything like this either.

There's fungus among us! One of the pics is pretty clear, it sure looks like fungus growth.

I have one ton of Blaschac that has the same crud on the bags as yours. This ton looked a bit more weathered then the rest, even the bags were yellowed. I fill my buckets in the basement, and vac up the crud left behind. The coal burns ok. I just figured the coal was in someones "yard" too long, and got wet.

If it feels hard and gritty it may be minerals, salts and calcium like the stuff you get on glasses in the dishwasher with hard water. If soft and degrades between the fingers, it is probably mold, fungus or something like it.

Yup, Its gritty beweeen the fingers. Doesn't smell like sulfur, even when I gave it some flame. Weird. Nothing elso on any other brand bags. Mold? Glad the A Unit can't log into my forum account........

Looked at some of the other Blaschak bags and see where one has been leaking the yellow stuff on the cement floor. I must a got some sorta "bonus material" in my bags, maybe a "Super Blaschak" that will heat my house on one bag a year.

Fungi would indicate two different species of fungus :) ....besides..."fungi among us" doesn't roll off the tongue and "fungi among I", well, ya know.... :)

It's mold, fungus. Look at the middle photo, it clearly shows the concentric growth so common with a fungi life pattern.

Must be something on or in the Blaschak bags to precipitate this if in fact it is mold. Nothing growing anywhere else or on any of the Hudson or Reading bags of coal I have I the house. Seems to like the Blaschak only.

And on the bags where this stuff is accumulating, there are no holes in the bags so its clearly something that seems to be accumulating / growing

Guess, to be safe than sorry, a little spray with some diluted clorox to grind this puppy to a halt. Don't need it in the house. Wife finds out I'll be lugging 3 tons of coal back outside.
