Combustion Fan Noise

Combustion Fan Noise

PostBy: imshearer On: Mon Jan 05, 2009 3:08 pm

I just fired up my new Pioneer Back Vent a week ago. Everything is working well, but the combustion fan seems to be extremely loud. It sounds like a small washing machine on the spin cycle and even has a high pitched hum that comes and goes. It is not a constant blowing sound like the convection fan. Sounds more like a car with a bad bearing. We turn off the convection fan to watch movies but the combustion fan is still overwhelming. Is this normal or do I have a bad fan? I have talked to my dealer but he sort of shrugged it off. I noticed that there are 4 mounting holes in the back of the stove, but only three have bolts in them. I don't know if this is normal, but there is no room for a the bolt head in the 4th hole on the outside because the motor is right up against the back of the stove at that point. Any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes they can't get to all the bolts in ( I think mine only has 2 or 3), but check to make sure they are all tight, or remove the fan, oil it, check the housing, make sure nothing is loose, but normally it's just the metal to metal contact of the fan to the housing.

You might be able to put a gasket (hi temp) between the fan and back of stove, it might help quiet it down. Sometimes they do make noise, are you getting any FINES from the stoker into the motor? Sometimes that will start to make the motor make noises.

Mine was kinda loud also but I'm was pretty sure nothing was wrong with it. Didn't want to put up with it for the winter so I mounted it below the stove in the basement and used 3" metal flex duct and 2 fabricated ends to connect the duct to the stove and to the blower. Silent now, ended up being a good decision.

I agree that some motors and fans are louder then others. If you like. send me your address and I will gladly send you out a new one, all you need to pay for is the UPS. If it solves the problem then just ship me back your old one.

Mine had gotten very loud and all I did to fix it was to gently stick a small thin piece of metal between the top of the combustion fan motor housing and the bottom of the hopper. Noise went right away and it's not large enough to push the motor out of alignment just enough so it doesn't make any extra noise. Now all I need is to figure out how to silence the convection fan when it kicks up on high and all will be right with the world. 8-)

Kudos to Jerry and his wife for having such great loyalty and follow up with their customers. I wish more companies cared for their customers like they do.

While I don't own an LL I'm glad to see a small company stand by their products. To bad they weren't all like that. I've spent two months chasing a local shop over a busted new dishwasher    but that's another story.
