efm auger question

how much auger should be sticking into my 55 gallon barrel?
i'm letting the barrel run low today so i can check how much is sticking thru......i'm getting alot of fines at the bottom of the barrel and i keep breaking shear pins.....ran out of spare pins the other day.....i'm using cheaply made chineese cotter pins

Just enough for the Auger tube not to fall out of the hole 2 to 3 " into the drum The auger itself should be 4 " to 6"
sticking out of the tube Use copper wire like 14ga instead of steel cotter Pins until you get shear pins Your buck is over sized you need to put a screen on the top of the drum to keep the bigger pieces out 1/2 "mesh for rice and 9/16 mesh for buck Take a ride down to the shop for Pins 25 cents a piece also why you are there Pay him for the two ash pans

crap forgot about the pans.....as soon as i get some bucks i'll stop down.......if i'm breaking the efm shear pins wont the copper wire snap instantly?
superior buck is oversized? i havent been going anywhere else since you turned me on to it.......burning superior in the kenmore also now.......rice is a mess and they dont always have it......but if i have to i'll switch......i like the heat that superior puts out

Both of you guys are burning buck in your EFM's. What did you have to do besides increase air to make it work?

Nothing but Air and a screen over the top of the drum to keep the bigger pieces out

I'm feeding right out of my bin so I guess buck isn't an option for me, no way to screen it.

Yes they will break that is what you want to happend steel will not break as easy and you can & will break the Auger
all Buck # 1 will have big pieces in it 9/16 x 5/16 Rice is 5/16 x 3/16 the auger tube is 2" the Auger is 1.5" that leaves
a 1/2 " between the Tube and Auger if you want to burn buck then stick a screen over the drum to stop the bigger pieces
from going in and breaking the Pins or get Rice / #2 buck anything over 9/16 will be Pea size 13/16 x 9/16 to big

wait in 3 or 4 Years when you go threw the 12 tons that is in there and switch over then use #2 buck no screen needed

efm recommends about 3 to 4 inches of worm outside the pipe. More than that and you'll start grinding coal.

where is this #2 buck chute jc? that stuff sounds real nice!

Just curious..... what's the advantage to burning buck? It seems extra work to screen it all, there must be an extra benefit.

Bigger the coal size. The more heat.

Thats correct,any more than that and the worm will wear out faster,thus grinding coal,but not enough and you will have feed problems.

At the end of the bin auger there should be 1/34" to 2" or more depending where you put the hole in the drum of clearance from the bottom of drum or bin now how is the coal going to wear the S.S. Auger flights Anthracite is not that hard it will break up into pieces unless the coal; has alot of bone /rock in it The main Place that I seen Auger flights wear is on the Pot auger at the first one or two Flights on the bushing end That is because the Auger & pot Bushings wear out then the flights can rub on the cast iron pot wearing on the flights . That will also make the Mid & Bin Auger off center and then they will rub agianst the Inside of the Auger Tube . I have 6" of auger sticking out of my tube and I have 0
Problems with feeding or fines I get a baby Jar lid full on fines every other day and I am Running Buck #1 Because you can get it all the time and it is cleaner then Rice And more heatout burning less coal .
