Sorry you lost your fire Jack. Took the wife out for dinner & had people over so I've been tied up. Just fire it back up when you return. Forecast is calling for more moderate temps so...less clinkers! :)

Devil,
Glad you had a nice dinner. Mine was a cold hot meatball sub :D Anyway, Ash all cleaned out with the rainbow vacuum. I wasn't going to use that good one and need to get a micro filter for the shop vac but the wife used the good vac so it's all done. Were only 11below right now and needed to raise the thermostat a bit to be comfy. Oh well, Tomorrow we shall try again.

Fire it up!

I'll probably have to make some modifications to the grate system like you devil to prevent future happenings.

I had that happen about a month ago............I was ready to shut it down & clean out, but figured I had nothing to lose by waiting a while for the coal to turn to ash. I left it alone for about 4 hours, then grabbed the shaker handle with both hands & gave it a sharp, fast jolt............

I couldn't believe it actually broke through, no damage! The fire was pretty low at that point......was out on the edges, but still a little red in the center. Took some patience (which I'm not known for... ) , but was able to save the fire in less than an hour.

O.K. The grate is stuck quite a ways open and lots of coal on top. I can't seem to get it. I was shaking short strokes but it caught and I couldn't open it more and then all of a sudden went open a ways and stuck.

Pour yourself a stiff drink :shots: :funny: .......& just let it go for a few hours. When the stove is cooler, do what I recommended in step #1 above. (dump the ash pan when you take it out)

If that doesn't work, you can keep it going overnight (to get you through the frigid night) & then let it go out during the day tomorrow. Clean it out & restart...It's a pain, but not the end of the world. ;)

Just happend to me a few nights ago. I filled it for the night thinking it would burn off by the next morning; no luck. I had to let the furnace almost burn out, empty the fire box and start over.

Well, I am up and burning coal again and the wife appreciates the warmth. I just cut back on the draft which was about halfway and the LR temp is 84 and Kitchen 76. With this balmy weather, Outside temp is plus 20 I don't need the stove so high.

Good for you Jack & the higher outdoor temps should mean fewer clinkers & will definitely mean less coal used & ash created.

I'll bet you broke the indoor speed record for opening your ash door, getting on you knees, looking up & inspecting your shaker grates after you felt it break though!
