I guess at 77 I am the oldest so far. I remember when the government took over the mines to end a strike during WW2. There was a famous picture of an owner being carried out.

One of the coveted jobs along with lawn mowing, when I was in my teens, was taking out the ashes from Iron fireman boilers.Fuel oil was 8 cents per gallon then. It was easy to have two or three cars because there was no insurance required.

The thing I have never figured out was delivering coal in a barrel. A big barrel. Filled at the truck and then tipped at an angle and rolled to the chute in the house. Fast too. They had steel pipe handled wheelbarrows but often seemed to prefer the barrel.

Best coal I have used was Bethlehem. Looked like black broken glass.

Surprised how old Devil is. They say that if you reach a certain age and you are not a conservative you haven't got a brain. He must be young at heart.
