Hitzer Model 82 UL Questions

Hitzer Model 82 UL Questions

PostBy: PC 12-47E On: Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:26 pm

We are interested in adding a second (hand fired) coal stove to our 200++ year old farmhouse. The stove will be vented in our fireplace during the cold winter months. Spring through fall the stove will be removed so we can enjoy burning wood in the fireplace. The Hitzer model 82 looks like a top choice for us.
Unfortunately the Hitzer stove dealer does not stock the model 82 and I have never seen one.
Questions... How high is the top of the flue outlet from the floor?
Are the legs through bolted or welded?
Do you like the ash pan size and ash removal with th 82? The Harman SF250s ash pan and ash door are narrower than the shaker grates. :x Only 80% fo the ash lands in the pan. The other 20% has to be shoveled out each day. This set up makes ash removal very dusty and take much more time with the ash door open.
Any other good or bad points with the model 82?
Thanks, RS

This might look better but not as much heat

The 82 has no glass and might be too tall for your Rumford which is 42" if I recall.
Remember the baro!

A picture with the flue damper open.

Although this is the model 82 furnace, it should give you a good idea of what you would get with the model 82 without the furnace jacket. Hope this helps. :) DOUG

Thanks CapeCoaler, The height of the exhaust flange is key! Also I may need 2 BAROs with the 16"x16" flue.

Call or email Hitzer for any info you want. They are most helpful. My emails to them have been returned within a day. I have a different model of Hitzer but can atest to the quality and thoughtful engineering they put into my stove. :)

Doug, one difference I noticed between the furnance model and the radient stove model (what I have) is the extra row of bricks in the furnace unit. Mine has a single row of vertical bricks, about 8" high; the furnace unit has an extra row of bricks laid sideways at the front and back, and taller bricks on the sides.

I'm burning an 82 U.L. that i buitd my own collector around and it is a good stove. I wasnt told about much difference other then there is also something different with the secondary burn chamber too i think, and the the location of the dial for the air damper, plus some mounting hardware is welded to the f.a. for the attachment of the cabinet. I'd call to get all the exact differences. If the f.a. truly has a deeper firebox all i can say is holy smokes, because the u.l.'s is plenty big, heck i just threw in some stove size to see how it goes in the beast.

The 82 looks close to my Harman 160. Just curious, what is the difference between the 82 ul and the fa?

Hi Sharkman8810, Thanks for the info on the model 82. I have 3 questions for you......

How high is the top of the flue outlet off the floor?

Are the legs removable?

Does the ash pan catch all of ashes when you shake down? 20% of the ashes in my SF250 miss the pan.

Thanks, RS

I just measured my model 82 UL, the top of the flue outlet is 41.5 inches off the floor. The legs do not appear to be removeable. The ash pan isn't perfect, but it does catch most of the ashes.

I'd go with Robert's, i tried to measure, but i have my heat collector cabinet is in the way. When ashes shake and fall they will blow around and land where they may, but it is a good setup. The legs arent removeable that i can tell.
