I just sandblasted a small cast iron coal stove. Should I paint it with high temp paint, or use "stove black"? to give it color and protection?

Stove Black on Cast!
How old is the stove, antiques require the 'black'!

I've never used stove black so I don't know about it. I've always used Stove Bright brand paint. It goes on well and covers great.

I sanded down and restored a 100+ yr old potbelly cast iron stove and used stove black (Rutland). It came out great and the stove is in use now in my 4 season 'treehouse' (room I built off the back of the barn 12 ft off the ground and in the tree's -- hence 'treehouse'. Good luck with your project!

Sorry Freddy!

I posted the wrong stove in the treehouse! That was my old wood burning Vogalzang(sp?). Here is the potbelly coal stove! Sorry for the wrong pic!

p.s. I did 'touch it up' in the hard to get spots with high temp spray!

Cool treehouse Cato. :)

How old do stoves need to be before they are "antique"? I'm guessing this is 50's or early 60's but really don't know. It's nothing special, it was made to heat a chicken house! LOL Sad, but true. Maybe that's why it had a $25 price tag? It is however the only stove I've ever seen with an automatic exhaust damper. A bimetal thermostat controls both air in and air out. Crazy design! One way or another, it'll end up black.

Stove black gets into the pores of the cast iron, paint is just a skin that can flake off.

Freddy:

I was offered a similar stove and was told it was used to heat chicken houses also. Yours is in much better condition the one I was offered was to far gone to restore--I was going to use it in my 'treehouse' but went with the potbelly stove instead (which I found on Uncle Henry's from a guy in Vienna,ME.

OK.... It's black! I'm not tellin' how. ;)

It'll be fun to light it off & see how it runs. Maybe this week sometime. I made a little ash pan for it from a scrap os 16 GA steel. All that's left is to make a shaker handle. It's got all new bolts, but I salvaged most of the square nuts. Each one was a project, had to heat them red to get them off the broken bolts and then tap each one to clean up the threads. Furnace cement did a good job sealing the seams.

I didn't dare do anything but clean the galvanized housing. I thought paint would just peel so I steel wool'd it & let it be.

Congrats on the restoration of that lil' beauty. If I didn't see the before pick, I'd swear that stove was fresh off the line.

Look forward to seeing the dancing blue ladies performing inside.

It's handy to have a friend with a bead blaster.

What are friends for but to borrow their tools & use their inventory?
