No the timer is to keep the fire going when the t-stat is NOT CALLING FOR HEAT. You will more than likely NOT have a 1" fire when the stove is at idle with all 6 pins in on the timer. The timer is to just keep the fire at a minimum burn so you don't have to relight it every time the t-stat is not calling for heat. If the timer was not there the fire would die out when the t-stat stopped calling for heat. The stove would burn the coal that was on the grate and then it would go out without fresh coal.

I removed a total of six clips; two from each group. I have a very narrow band of hot coals during idle.
I did go the conservative route and remove one clip at a time to get to where I'm at. For instance, I went from 6+6+6 to 6+6+5, to 6+5+5, ect until I got to 4+4+4 on my clips. I didn't loose a fire during the period of adjustment nor have I lost it since, so it seems to work for me at 4+4+4. You can really only experiment with adjusting the clips when it's warm enough outside that your thermostat won't be calling for heat in the house.
