Embryonic Stem Cell Research - Finally!

Federal research funds were prohibited for embryonic stem-cell research until August 2001, when Bush approved spending for research using only already-existing cell lines. Scientists later discovered that fewer than two dozen of those lines were useful for research "Hans Keirstead did alot of the research for Geron. I think that they paid his laboratory $500,000 per year and his laboratory also got funding from NIH and the state of California. So, yes, the state and federal funding probably supported the development of the therapy". <(from Dr Young) I could find no evidence of bushs block , but it's funny as soon as he's gone the trials get the green light after being on hold since april 2008. "The FDA were likely under direct pressure to delay the trial and thus did so by asking for more data. Obama's inauguration and Wednesday's phone call are, to me at least, more than a coincidence. People didn't think this would happen for another five years , Okarma said. But it will happen soon and it would have happened sooner if it weren't for the ridiculous Bush policies". Like most things bush did , we will never know the truth on the hold.

Sorry if someone already mentioned it but I skipped reading about, yet another, the religious war. (Perhaps it would be instructive to actually read the constitution about establishment of religion.) It seems that the rest of the world did not have any prohibition on any kind of stem cell research for the last 20 years. If this were such a potentially lucrative and promising field, where are the resulting products from 20 years of research. I heard that other countries actually make good cars. That must be luck because we are always the leaders in the world on everything!!! (man beats chest)

I think perhaps our founding fathers were all clones to begin with & it was still secretly carried on thru history. How else could it be explained how some here know exactly how the founding fathers thought about every current event. I`m sure they must have covered & discussed str & the tapes must have somehow been ereased. I say it`s about time research is funded & tried. If you never try we would still be riding horses & defending ourselves with muskets.
As for moral & ethical questions, the heck with them if it doesn`t turn out as some here would like ( even with a supreme court ruling ) you would ignore it .

You boys should try reading the articles. You are missing the point. The synthesis of genetic material has the potential to unlease organisms that we have no defenses for in nature.

It's a huge mistake to re-engineer that which you don't fully understand.

Hate to disagree with you Mike, but nature is reengineering itself every day. And there is always the possibility that it will be harmful to humans. The flu is the classic example amongst many others. But really, if we dont do it, the rest of the world is going to. Object on personal grounds but dont halt progress.

I think the founding fathers would be rolling in their graves if they knew that the goverment was taking tax money from the people and spending it on research. Not the job of the federal government!

I agree!!...RESEARCH.....why the hell would we want to actually LEARN anything of value, when we could just keep stumbling our way through the years?!? (& it's a damned good thing we were able to figure out how to build the A-bombs (that ended WWII & saved thousands of our GI's) by reading the instructions on Cracker-Jacks box tops!....No reearch money wasted there!)

Not saying I'm against knowledge or research. I am saying that the federal goverment should not be the source of the funds. If you are suggesting that war is a function of the federal goverment then I would agree. If you are suggesting that any other other function, other then those granted to the central goverment, should be done by the states or industry. Just like it says in the document, you know, the one you read in grade school. The Constitution of the United States!!
But on the other side I don't think the federal government should have had any say at all in stem cell research, for or against. See how that works when there is a priciple behind my ravings? Then again we would not be having this converstaion!

If only the private sector has anything to do with research then a patent would be issued for any & all helpful advances & only the very wealthy could take advantage. Once again greed would be formost & too bad for the good of mankind. Will we never learn?

If you think many government functions are best handled by private entities, I would strongly encourage you to take some time to learn about food inspections.
