Yaaa, I agree with estimating high. Mentally it's way easier. Nothing worse than paying more than you thought. I'll give you 9 hrs as a starting point. Work down from there. :)

As I mentioned in another post, I had a 7" insulated stainless steel liner installed in my 30+ ft large unlined class A chimney.
Including labor, material, and an extension of terra cotta on the top of the chimney $1,600.
The original estimate was about $2,000, but we haggled a little.
Contractors are hurting for work in many areas.
They did a great job. Pulled the insert out, put it back in with no mess. Took them about 4 hrs

As we have all said $3000 seems to be high so…
Being a curious person it would be great to get a picture of the install location.
My guess is there are extenuating circumstances here.
The location, contractor, job market or customer is the reason for the estimate that seems to be 30% -40% high.
The construction market is slowing but the good contractors and trade persons are actually doing ok as people see value in quality work.

I have added a pic and the info fromt he quote hope this helps in you guys being to provide me some sound feedback. As always thanks

Not sure how to attach pictures, hope this posts.
He is a list of material from the Chimney company.
"Pre-Fab Chimney installed through ceiling.
1 18inch double wall
4 3 foot double wall
2 tee covers"
Labor/materials/installation $2,989.00

The tape is where I plan on puuting the stove. Pick it up Saturday. It is an Alaskan Channing III.

The stainless is from the ceiling through the roof and high enough to get over the peak of the roof.
I plan on using the black pipe fromt he stove to where it ties into the stainless pipe in the ceiling.

The tape looks a bit close. Are the distances by the owners manual? When the double wall comes through the ceiling make sure the single wall pipe is 18" from any combustibles.

It may be a bit close this was more for reference to see exactly where we wanted to place the stove.

excellent reply capecoaler. I do the same thing. But how many times have you lost a job because your price was honest? Even though you told them you figured high to minimize "surprises".

Now that I see the pics, the price seems even more outrageous. You can either use a ceiling support kit or a roof support kit. The amount of SS pipe needed is minimal. A stainless T is expensive so put the T for the baro in the regular stovepipe. In good weather I cant see this job costing more then $1000 -$1300. A far cry from $3000!

$1000 for the SS exterior setup.
$300 for the DSP inside.
$1125 for labor.
$2425 Parts and Labor.

As far as losing jobs because of the way I price jobs...
I do computer work and people know me and the people I do work for...
I have a good reputation...
If they go with someone else so be it...
Every job I do is just better advertisement...
Word of mouth is the best...
Just cannot buy that!

Gentlemen,
I appreciate the input. I have a contractor coming by tomorrow to give me his estimate, so I will let you know the outcome.

I would put the stove on an inside wall, that way you lose less heat to the outside.

This room is all windows. There is no wall to speak of. One of the main reasons I decided to go with coal heat is that this sunroom is always cold, due to the fact that there is no real insulation to speak of and this cold air flows right into the rest of the house.
Well, I met with a conractor today and I told him that I would buy the material I just want to pay him for the labor (install). He told me he would send 2 guys, they would have it done in 4 hours and quoted a price of $250.00. He went on to tell me that due to the economy he is having to price jobs right or else no work. I was excited to say the least. It looks as if I will be ordering the material.

You guys see any concerns or pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Ask him what he will charge for materials.
I hate it when the customer buys parts for me as it can cause some hassles.
Seems fair at $31.50/hr.
