Timer running backwards?

Timer running backwards?

PostBy: mr1precision On: Sun Feb 01, 2009 11:21 am

Just after Christmas I pulled this pins out of the timer because my AA-130 was working full tilt.
Everything been fine until yesterday. The weather's going to be in the fifties so I figured I'd put some pins in ahead of time. I wound the timer to the point where the pins were touching the micro swicth. After about a minute expecting the boiler to start and nothing happened. I looked at the timer and the dial was running backwards! Keep in mind nothing's changed since I pulled the pins. The only thing I can think of is the ice strorm power outage may have something to do with it. Maybe a power spike?
Anyone seen this before?

That's wacky! Did you try removing power & starting it again? What make & model is it? Looking at it mine turns clockwise. Maybe you forgot which way it goes? If you look closely at the tab that the pins strike you should be able to figure which way its supposed to turn.

Is the boiler still getting power from the exact same source? Some motors will run backwards if the polarity of the outlet is reversed. If you have an outlet tester, it would be easy to check.

Nothing has changed electrically since the first day it was hooked up. Yes, I shut it off and re-strarted and it still going backwards. It's an AC motor it shouldn't matter right? Picture evil kinevel hitting a jump from the non pointy end of the ramp. Thats exactly whats happening.

It an Intermatic C-8865.

Also, I swapped the wires to see if coalkirk was on to something. Nope still runs backwards. I think it must be smoked and time for a new one, but it's only four months old. :gee:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronous_motor

A synchronous motor won't reverse direction when the leads are reversed. It runs at a constant speed according to the cycles per second of the alternating current it's connected to, that's why electric clocks stay accurate.

I have no idea why it is running !sdrawkcab

I am not familiar with the innards of the timer you mention but is there any possibility that a gear could have moved on its shaft and inappropritely meshed with another and reversed the motion, just a crazy thought. Mike

When I was a kid at home we had a plug in kitchen clock that would run backwards almost every time the power would blink. We would just unplug it for a few seconds and plug it back in and it would run right again. It sounds like you tried that so I guess it's time for a new Timex.
